DOST Program and Projects for the Philippine Rubber Industry
PRIA, together with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) IX Regional Standards and Testing Laboratories conducted a half-day Seminar on DOST’s Program and Projects for the Philippine Rubber Industry last April 12, 2016 at the Winter Room of Luxent Hotel, Quezon City.
The objective of the seminar is to create awareness to the rubber industry players on the established and on-going program and projects being funded by DOST for the rubber sector.
The seminar was attended by PRIA Members and guests from the DOST and University of the Philippines – Diliman. Ms. Tinnie Anacleto of DOST PCIEERD acted as the seminar’s host and moderator.
Ms. Rhodora Medalla, PRIA President, welcomed and acknowledged the guests and participants. She also introduced the Special Guest of Honor, Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevara, Undersecretary of Scientific and Technological Affairs of the Department of Science and Technology.
Dr. Guevara also acknowledged the presence of PRIA members, guests and researchers of DOST. Seeing the potential of rubber, they gave their support through research on rubber.
The sequence of the seminar was from the projects for the upstream to the downstream sector. For the presentations, Engr. Belen Bisana, Supervising Research Specialist of the DOST – Forest Products Research and Development Institute, presented the “Optimization & Improvement of Processes in the Production of Technically Specified Rubber and Demonstration of Improved Facilities in Zamboanga Peninsula”.
Dir. Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano, Regional Director of DOST (Region IX) – Regional Standards and Testing Laboratories, presented on the tests available as well as the prices and sampling procedures at their Laboratory designed for testing raw rubber.
Engr. Jose Ryan Amante of the DOST – Industrial Technology Development Institute presented their testing facilities, available tests and prices of tests at their laboratory for rubber products testing.
Dr. Agustin M. Fudolig, Deputy Executive Director for Technical Services of DOST – Metals Industry Research and Development Center presented “Revitalization of MIRDC’s Testing Facility in Support of the Automotive Components and Parts Manufacturing Sector.”
Dr. Leslie Joy Diaz, Associate Professor – Composite Materials Research and Laboratory of University of the Philippines-Diliman (Department of Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering), presented their ongoing project on Enhancing and Increasing Local Content in Rubber for Motorcycle Tire Application.
Dr. Bryan Pajarito, Associate Professor, Polymer Research Laboratory of the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of the Philippines-Diliman, presented on his ongoing Project 5 – Empirical Modelling of Rubber Compound using Active Design of Experiment.
Engr. Raul C. Sabularse, Deputy Executive Director of the DOST – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) delivered his closing remarks and thanked the attendees and guests for their participation for the very informative seminar.
